Curriculum Vitae

Maria Steinhoffis involved in the multicenter project PSYCHOnlineTHERAPIE, one ofthe largest psychotherapy studies ever conducted, which investigates the integration of digital treatment elements into outpatient psychotherapy (blended therapy) for patients with depressive and/or anxiety disorders in routine care. Her work focuses on the development of digital treatment elements as weil as the training and support of participating study therapists in the use of the online platform. Her scientific interest was already early on the topics of therapeutic relationship in digital forms of psychotherapy as weil as the importance of digitalization especiallyfor psychodynamic forms oftherapy. Since the beginning of 2021, she has also been training as a depth psychologist at the Ulm Psychotherapeutic and Psychoanalytic Institute.

Abstract

The therapeutic relationship in digital psychothetapy

The therapeutic relationship is considered to be a centrat mechanism of change in psychotherapy. lncreasingly, digital forms of psychotherapy are being used not only in research but also in the care of patients. Such new forms of treatment are full of opportunities and the scientific foundation as an evidence- based treatment option is extensive; at the same time, concems and skepticism prevail in many cases. ln particular, the question arises - frequently asked by practitioners - to what extent a therapeutic relationship can also be established via digital communication channels.

The talk will give an overview of the various forms of digital psychotherapy, ranging from synchronaus therapy sessions via digital communication channels to digital self-help interventions. Afterwards, a look at the current state of research will be taken and the assessment of the therapeutic relationship from both the patient's and the therapist's perspective in the various forms of digital psychotherapy will be reported. lt can be stated in advance that patients seem to experience a sustainable and positively evaluated working alliance even in digital therapies. 1t remains unclear to what extent the therapeutic relationship contributes to efficacy, especially in digital interventions with minimal therapeutic contact, which is why the rote of the therapeutic relationship in digital forms of psychotherapy and implications for research and practice will be discussed in conclusion.
